Weight Loss Drinks and Slimming Products in Southeast Asia: TikTok’s Rulebook, Region by Region

TikTok weight loss and slimming product ad rules across Southeast Asia
The tl;dr

TikTok's weight loss ads policy across Southeast Asia, market by market. Ads are allowed - but the wrong claim, image or targeting still gets you flagged.

The SEA Weight Loss Ad Market Is Open, But With a Rulebook You'd Better Read First

This is a compliance breakdown for advertisers and platforms, not weight-loss or medical advice.

We’ve seen all shapes and forms of weight-loss ads all over the world. But nothing quite hit it like in Southeast Asia.

And here's something a lot of brands don't know: TikTok does allow weight loss supplement and meal replacement advertising in key SEA markets. In fact, as of the September 2026 version of the policy, it allows it in a long list of markets well beyond SEA too, with conditions. If a guide tells you weight loss ads are banned across Western markets on TikTok, check its date, because it's out of date.

But “allowed” doesn't mean “anything goes.” 🧐

And on TikTok.. you’d be surprised how creative some advertisers can get just to promote their product!

‍

The gap between a compliant weight loss campaign in the Philippines and a rejected one in the same market isn't about the product. It's almost always about the language, the imagery, and the claims.

That slimming tea ad promising “Lose 5kg in 2 weeks”? Rejected 🙅

The protein shake campaign with a before-and-after video? Rejected on the creative and the landing page simultaneously 🙅

The wellness drink that “helps you finally get that slim body you want”? Also rejected 🙅

This post breaks down exactly which products can advertise in which SEA markets, what TikTok allows and prohibits, and the creative violations that get weight loss campaigns flagged because they're more subtle than most brands expect.

‍

Which SEA Markets Allow Weight Loss Advertising on TikTok?

‍

‍

Per TikTok's Weight Management and Body Image policy (last updated September 2026), the following Southeast Asian markets are permitted. As always, refer back to the actual policy page when reviewing your account and never take this blog article as gospel (I try to update the pages as often as the policies get updated!)

‍

Market Weight Loss Supplements Meal Replacements Surgery Ads
Cambodia ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Indonesia ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Malaysia ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Philippines ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Singapore ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Sri Lanka ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Thailand ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep
Vietnam ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Via TikTok Sales Rep

‍

Outside SEA, the same policy page also lists Australia and New Zealand, a MENA, Eurasia and Africa list, a European list (supplements and meal replacements only), and the US and Canada. The conditions differ market by market, so read the list for wherever you are targeting.

Age restrictions are mandatory across all these markets.

Any weight loss or muscle gain claims must be restricted to audiences aged 18 years or older. Set your minimum age to 18+ in your audience settings at the ad group level. Orrrrrr you're non-compliant from the moment the ad goes live. You will realise many products or services require age targeting within TikTok and in terms of ad spend and impressions, I suggest considering this extra step of targeting when launching your ad products (just to be safe!)

‍

The Claims That Get Your Campaign Rejected

‍

Category Prohibited Claims/Content
TikTok Weight Loss Advertising
  • References to unrealistic weight loss (rapid, dramatic, or specific numerical results)
  • Claims that the product alone, without diet or exercise, can lead to weight loss
  • Suggestions that losing weight is easy, guaranteed, or effortless
  • Encouragement of unhealthy lifestyles or unhealthy relationships with food
  • Before-and-after imagery showing body transformation (applies to ad creatives and landing pages)
  • "Clinically proven" or "scientifically proven" claims without verifiable substantiation (our read, not named in the policy)
  • Any language that links weight to desirability, success, happiness, or social standing
Body Image Rules
  • Messages that shame users about their bodies
  • Suggesting there is an ideal body type
  • Claims that looking a certain way will make someone more desirable, successful, happy, or popular
  • Claiming body appearance determines confidence, self-esteem, or social standing

‍

Example 1

__wf_reserved_inherit
This ad would not be allowed due to the language "Claims that looking a certain way will make someone more desirable, successful, happy, or popular"

‍

Example 2

__wf_reserved_inherit
Ads with products or language that guarantees weightloss without diet or exercise. No go 🚫

‍

Example 3

‍

So a slimming tea that says “Lose 5kg in 2 weeks!” violates the weight management rule.

One that says “Finally feel good about your skinny self” violates the body image rule. And one with a before-and-after video? That violates both simultaneously, across the creative and the landing page too if it is reflected there.

‍

What Language ACTUALLY Works for Weight Loss Products in SEA

Based on the best understanding and interpretation of the policy, here’s what would likely be allowed and what would not be allowed. I cannot guarantee a 100% your ad goes through if you use any of the lines that are compliant below, but it can at least reduce the probability your ad gets flagged (and if you are unsure, you can always reach out to us!).

‍

❌ Banned Phrasing ✅ Compliant Alternative
"Lose 5kg in 2 weeks" "Support a healthy lifestyle"
"Burns fat fast" "Supports your daily wellness routine"
"Finally get the body you want" "Feel energized and on track"
"Clinically proven weight loss" "Contains [ingredient], part of a balanced diet"
"No diet or exercise needed" "Best used alongside a balanced diet and active lifestyle"
Before-and-after body comparison Do not use before/after imagery at all

‍

Good example

‍

The rule of thumb: position your product as a support tool for a healthy lifestyle, not as the cause of weight loss 😉

‍

The Medicine and Supplement Licensing Reality

‍

__wf_reserved_inherit

‍

In Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Singapore, weight loss supplement advertising requires the brand to hold valid local regulatory licences: BPOM in Indonesia, NPRA in Malaysia, the Thai FDA in Thailand, FDA in the Philippines, and HSA in Singapore. These are the regulators' names, not links, because TikTok's own pages are the only sources we cite here. Look up each agency's current registration rules directly.

As far as I can see, TikTok's policy itself doesn't name these specific agencies. It only requires compliance with applicable local licensing requirements generically, so it's on the advertiser to confirm which national regulator's approval applies.

If your product makes claims that position it as therapeutic, like treating obesity, managing medical conditions, or clinical intervention, my read is that it crosses into pharmaceutical advertising territory, which sits under TikTok's Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals policy and its own, stricter rules. Check that policy and talk to your TikTok Sales Representative before you run anything like it.

Best to avoid such language if you have only a generic supplement product in order to avoid an account suspension, especially so if there is no proof that your product provides a therapeutic effect.

For advertisers targeting all SEA regions, this is where it gets tricky because it also means having that ONE ad comply with more than one agency. Therefore worth doing your due diligence 👆

How Enforcement Actually Works (From TikTok's Own Pages)

We used to list news stories and regulator announcements about slimming campaigns that got pulled or prosecuted. We've taken those out, because this blog now only cites TikTok's own pages. Here's what TikTok itself says about what happens to a rule-breaking campaign:

  • Review: TikTok says most ads are reviewed within 24 hours (Ad Review FAQs)
  • Appeals: if you think a rejection is wrong, One Click Appeal aims to respond within 24 hours. You get one appeal per incident and can't edit the ad afterwards
  • Account level: TikTok's account suspension FAQ says a Poor Account Health status leads to suspension, severe violations can mean immediate suspension, and after a first violation you get 30 days to fix or appeal before it becomes permanent

One more thing worth remembering: local regulators in each market run their own enforcement, separate from TikTok. A TikTok approval never replaces your licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

‍

Are slimming teas and detox drinks considered weight loss supplements under TikTok's policy?

If the product is marketed with weight loss or body composition claims, it falls under TikTok's Weight Management policy regardless of product format. Slimming teas, detox drinks, and fat-burning beverages all qualify.

Can I show body transformation results in my SEA weight loss campaign?

No. TikTok's policy prohibits before-and-after imagery and references to unrealistic results. This applies to ad creatives and landing pages, so check them both before you hit publish!

Can you advertise weight loss supplements on TikTok in Indonesia?

Yes, subject to 18+ audience targeting, valid BPOM licensing, and full compliance with TikTok's Weight Management and Body Image advertising policies. Claims must support a healthy lifestyle and cannot promise guaranteed results. (Do not forget, definitely no before and after images!)

What weight loss claims are banned on TikTok in Southeast Asia?

Unrealistic weight loss claims, guaranteed results, before-and-after imagery, claims that products work without diet or exercise, and any language that links appearance to desirability or social standing. These restrictions apply globally too the way.

Are weight loss drink ads allowed in Singapore on TikTok?

Yes, again, with restrictions. Singapore is listed as a permitted market for weight loss supplement and meal replacement advertising, subject to 18+ targeting, HSA licensing, and TikTok's Weight Management and Body Image policy compliance.

What's the difference between a compliant and a non-compliant weight loss ad on TikTok?

A compliant ad positions the product as a support tool for a healthy lifestyle, targets 18+ audiences, uses no before/after imagery, makes no guaranteed or rapid weight loss claims, and does not link appearance to happiness or social acceptance.
